George's occupation was listed on the ship register as Farmer, Carpenter, Wheelwright. In Marianna HOCKING's obit (Mary Anna Tonkin STEPHENS – daughter), George is credited with having worked as a stone cutter in the erection of the C.P.O. (presumably the Adelaide Central Post Office), and also having made three successful trips to the Victorian gold fields.
George STEPHENS died 9th March 1878 (63yrs) of Pleuritis, at Rosevean, Oakbank. On 23 March 1878, Mary placed advertisements to sell or rent the Rosevean property, located about half a mile from Oakbank. In June 1881, advertisements were placed to sell all of the farm stock at Rosevean Farm.
Mary died on 20 August 1896 at Rosewater, South Australia, aged 78 and was buried at Woodside Methodist Cemetery.
