John Phillips ROGERS & Elizabeth LUKE

John Phillips ROGERS & Elizabeth LUKE
Arrived on 'David Malcolm' from Plymouth via London 1848
With 4 children Eliza Paull, Mary Hannah Paull, and two others.
John Phillips ROGERS was christened 26th December 1804 at Breage, Cornwall. His parents were Edward ROGERS and Ann PHILLIPS. He married Frances PAULL on 12th July 1833 at Illogan, Cornwall, England. Frances PAULL was baptised 13th July 1806 at Redruth, St. Uny Church, Cornwall. Her parents were Richard & Mary PAULL.

Several sources list John and Frances's children as
1. Cyrus Paull ROGERS b. 1835 Illogan Cornwall d. Sep 1842 (7yrs) Cornwall
2. James Paull ROGERS b. Dec 1835 Redruth Cornwall
3. William Henry ROGERS b.1836 Redruth Cornwall
4. Charles Henry ROGERS b. 1838 Redruth Cornwall
5. Eliza Paull ROGERS b. 1840 Redruth Cornwall m. Charles James GENT
6. Mary Hannah Paull ROGERS b. 1841 Redruth Cornwall

The middle names of four of the six children have PAULL in them so it is OK to this point.

The 1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census has the following at Fore Street, Redruth, Cornwall
John ROGERS 30, b. 1811 (birth place not listed)
Frances ROGERS 35, b.1806 birth place Cornwall
Cyrus ROGERS 6, b. 1835 birth place Cornwall
William ROGERS 4, b. 1837 birth place Cornwall
Charles ROGERS 3 b. 1838 birth place Cornwall
Eliza ROGERS 1 b. 1840 birth place Cornwall

Again, OK to this point assuming that James died as a child and Mary Hannah was born after the census.
John Phillips ROGERS emigrated to South Australia on 'David Malcolm' from Plymouth via London 1848, arriving 23rd March 1848. The ship was described as a fine barque. It departed from London via Plymouth on 21 Dec 1847, and the voyage was 93 days. On board were 250 immigrants chiefly from Huntingdonshire, Wiltshire, Devon and Cornwall. Several children perished on the voyage and several babies were born on the voyage. The ship list and the shipping intelligence in the papers say that he was travelling with his wife and four children. I have yet to find an original source that names his wife and children on this voyage. An obit for Mrs. Eliza GENT says she was one of the children (Eliza Paull ROGERS) and that she was from Redruth, born on 18th January 1840. Another researcher says that one of the children was Mary Hannah Paull ROGERS, so we have two of the four confirmed.

When John emigrated, several sources say his wife was Elizabeth LUKE. Family records say that John and Elizabeth had the following children in South Australia.
1. Elizabeth Luke ROGERS b. 29 Mar 1850 in Adelaide m. Thomas PRINCE
2. John Phillips ROGERS b. 22 Aug 1852 in Adelaide perhaps m. Julia McCARTHY
3. Sarah Luke ROGERS possibly born 21 Nov 1854 m. Frank BADMAN
4. Josephine Phillips ROGERS b. 27 Jun 1857 in Adelaide m. Alexander JOCEY
5. Eva Phillips ROGERS b. 7 May 1860 in Adelaide m. Joseph STEVENSON (widower)
6. Alexandra Ada ROGERS b. 26 Jan 1864 at Adelaide m. James William COMLEY

As in the first group of children, the Luke or Phillips name appears in 5 of the six children, whick is OK.
The only scenario that seems to work for me is that Frances PAULL died after 1840 and John married Elizabeth LUKE before emigrating to South Australia in 1848 and having more children with Elizabeth.

John Phillips ROGERS married 3rd quarter 1847 Redruth, Cornwall, England (Vol 9 page 297)
Elizabeth LUKE m. 3rd quarter 1847 at Redruth, Cornwall (Vol 9 page 367)
The marriage records don't identify marriage partners, but I didn't find any other John Phillips ROGERS or Elizabeth LUKEs in Redruth in that time frame.
