Carl Wilhelm MATTNER (known as Wilhelm) came to South Australia on on 'Peter Godeffroy' from Hamburg, Germany 7 September 1857. Three years later, Johann Freidrich MATTNER (Carl's father) arrived on 'Caesar Godeffroy' from Hamburg, Germany 17 September 1860. With him was his two daughters Wilhelmina MATTNER and Johanne Louise MATTNER.

When Johann Freidrich MATTNER arrived with his two daughters, it was likely that they spent the first few months with Wilhelm at Hahndorf. They then moved to Harrogate where Wilhelm had bought Lots 48 and 63 in December 1860. In July 1864, Frederich bought Lots 52, 53 & 54 of Harrogate but these were transferred to Johann Georg Haebich on 26 November 1864. Johann built a house on Lot 33 Harrogate and it was transferred to Artemus Applegate on 24 February 1876 and he then lived with Wilhelm at Oakbank. It is thought that Freidrich had worked as a labourer. Freiderich died 1 January 1880 (aged 72) and is buried in the old part of the cemetery at St. Michaels Lutheran Church at Hahndorf.

Carl Wilhelm MATTNER (Wilhelm) was as vehicle builder and wheelwright. After arrival in South Australia, he was at Hahndorf for a short time then Harrogate. It was at Harrogate that Wilhelm met his future brother-in-law Carl August MARKS, who was a blacksmith. Wilhelm work for him before they joined together and set up a carriage making business at Oakbank in 1865. E.W. Mattner (b.1893) had said that as a boy, he remembers watching his grandfather (Carl Wilhelm) at Hahndorf, working on timber beams for the building of the Hahndorf Mill. Wilhelm was living in Hahndorf when he married Pauline Emily MARKS on 4 September 1862 at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, Hahndorf.

Pauline Emily MARKS was born in Prussia and emigrated with her family on 'Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel' from Bremen, Germany, arriving 29th October 1846 . She was 3 years old when they emigrated. After arrival, the family lived for a short time at Klemzig before settling permanently at Hahndorf. She went to school, helped her parents in the garden and walked to Adelaide to sell produce from the family farm. She also did domestic work for wealthier families. Pauline was 19 years old when she married Wilhelm.
